How are islands named?

Islands come in many shapes and sizes, and have a variety of topography — some are lush and verdant, full of tropical vegetation and fruits, while others are dusty and barren.

Their names, similarly, in both real life and in literature, come in all sorts of flavors. Islands are named for their geographical features, local vegetation, history, discoverer, and more.

Here are a few examples.

• Maldives: The Maldives are a group of islands in the Indian Ocean, and its name means “garland of islands.”
• Seychelles: Also located in the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles were taken over by the French in the 1700s and are named after Jean Moreau de Seychelles, Louis XV’s Minister of Finance.
• Avalon: The name of Avalon, the fictional island from the King Arthur legend, means “the isle of fruit trees” and is of Welsh origin.
• Azkaban: Azkaban is a wizard prison set on an island in the Harry Potter series, where the most violent wizards are imprisoned. Its name, according to J. K. Rowling, derives from an amalgamation of ‘Alcatraz,’ the closest real life equivalent, and ‘Abaddon,’ the Hebrew word for ‘place of destruction’ or ‘depths of hell.’

What should I name my island?

This island generator creates several types of unique island names. There are eight types of island names.

Some islands names are generated using our own artificial intelligence program that creates new names that are similar to island names in the real world, such as Hawaii, Bora Bora, and Santorini.

Other island names are based on what’s on the island. Is the island home to a particular fruit, tree, or animal? We also consider the geography of the island, its personality, and climate.
